At a scout camp, somewhere near a mysterious sinkhole, Buřtguláš is in love with Pralinka, Pralinka with Řehoř, Řehoř with Romana—and Romana with songbooks. Towering above it all, armed with the strength of plain, no-nonsense common sense, stands Bába: the leader, with the soul of a dictator. But one day, truly strange things begin to happen. The insects start forming up in double files, it freezes in the middle of summer, and then comes an unexpected solar eclipse; the ground begins to shake and giant hailstones start to fall… The apocalypse? Maybe—but certainly not the kind you read about in books…
Because Řehoř and Romana find something that was meant to stay buried forever. One breath in… and a few seconds later they are both hurtling toward a place where death is the rule and survival the exception. Into a world whose inhabitants have no idea what an enormous problem they will soon have to face, and instead behave… almost like people. A merciless fight for survival begins in places where it doesn’t pay to trust anyone with more than two legs. And where the Čapek brothers shake hands with Orwell, and horror meets riotous comedy…
